More Than Muscles, Look to the Spine

Office Talk- Tues. Feb. 7 The Psychology of Fibromyalgia

************************************

It is important to look beyond the muscles in fibromyalgia. Muscles hurt and when there is pain all over, it is difficult to move. But, looking at the nervous system which controls the movement and sensations in the muscles are key. Old injuries are correlated with fibromyalgia and develop chironic nervous system backfiring. The chiropractic approach is to adjust the spine up to three times a day, and more than 10 times a week. It takes that much attention to the spine to reverse the chronic patterns that have developed over time.

The following websites have excellent explanations as to why this happens to the nervous system.

The Psychology of Fibromyalgia

In The Office: The Psychology of Fibromyalgia --Tues. Feb. 7...Click Here For Info

The psychology of fibromyalgia centers around the attitides of doctors, pharmaceutical companies, and fibromyalgia sufferers. These attitudes help or hinder the progress of fibromyalgia study.

How many people feel they hear the same information over and over? Nothing new has come out to really help people find the answers that helps them regain their indepenence, which fibromyalgia takes away. If there is new research, is it actually useful?

How does one deal with a doctor who says, "Learn to live with it?" What happens to relationships when others say outloud, "Well, you look fine to me?"

Somehow fibromyalgia sufferers have to find away around these attitudes so they can concentrate on getting better.

The lateset in-office talk secheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 7 will address these problems. The goal of these meetings is to leave with a positive outlook and new tools to use to improve life and function.

It's Easier to Talk About a Headache Than an Assault

It’s Easier to Talk About a Headache Than an Assault

Before I had my son, I taught clinical psychology to interns at the local chiropractic college. I graduated there, as well, and was familiar with the curriculum. When students asked why they had to learn so much about psychological diagnosis, I told them it would be crucial to their practice.

When one thinks of chiropractic, sore necks and backs come to mind. In a simplistic way, that is true. However, aches and pains do more than disrupt our activities. They become our physical diaries of events in our lives. A receptive practitioner knows to investigate deeper into the history of an injury or health condition. Chiropractors not only treat a hurt back, they help a patient find insight into the cause of their distress. With gentle adjustments and empathic support, chiropractors restore a person’s energy so resolving problems are achievable. While we are not therapists or self-help gurus, we can open someone’s mind to facing serious situations with courage.

Very often a chiropractor is the first professional to see someone who is experiencing mental distress. For every headache, sore neck, or strained back there is a story behind it. People willingly seek help for their physical complaints yet ignore their emotional problems. It is still not acceptable to speak of depression, suicide, or anxiety. Emotional stress can manifest into bodily symptoms which are easier to deal with since society prefers it that way. A battered woman may seek chiropractic care because she knows an adjustment will help the musculoskeletal injuries. She can keep the conversation superficial and avoid the real cause of her pain. Because everyone has headaches, it is “okay” to complain about them as casually as talk about the weather. If the headache is caused by the overwhelming schedule of a single parent or an alcoholic’s hangover, these are topics that are too embarrassing to acknowledge. No one wants to share their perceived failings or ask for help. Within our hypochondriac culture, we can freely gripe about aging and sickness while glossing over the psychological hurts.

When I taught the clinical psychology class, I placed heavy emphasis on taking a thorough history including questions on personal safety and emotional well-being. I also advised my students to be prepared for crying and cathartic conversations. An understanding professional who takes the time to listen can be reassuring and connect the patient to an appropriate counselor for further mental health care.

I do hope people can reject the societal attitude that reinforces mental health neglect. My chiropractic colleagues and I see the results that show physical and emotional health are related. A major recommendation of my wellness education program is to take care of both. Awareness makes a difference. I urge anyone in distress to seek help and find a practitioner who is willing to listen. Attending to the mind and the body together will improve health care outcomes and prevent the development of chronic syndromes.

Meet My Guest Writer Patricia Andrews

I have only met Patricia over the internet. She found my web log and shared with me her project. Please take a look at Patricia's information. She has a remarkable story and she is working on a book based on her experiences.

"I have outlived two husbands and raised four children by myself. At 37, I graduated from Pomona College, Phi Beta Kappa, Cum Laude, with a B.A. in Botany. I went on to earn first an M.A. in 1964, then a Ph.D. in 1972 as a Botanist-Environmentalist from Claremont Graduate School in California.
During that time and following, I became interested in plants from a health standpoint. As a result of further education, I am an Herbalist, Iridologist, Nutritional Counselor, Healer and a Kinesiologist and I have owned a Natural Products Store.
In 2000, I developed Fibromyalgia and by 2001 I was in bad shape. While confined to a recliner chair for two months, I decided to change my total outlook on life. I returned to researching natural products, homeopathies, exercise and diet regarding FMS. I also did spiritual healing, meditation, visualization and set an intention to be totally well.
In September 2001, 10-months into the disease after almost 30 years of marriage, my second husband died suddenly of a heart attack. At that time, I could barely walk without help and his death set me back somewhat. Three months later I again made a huge change in my attitude about life and my part in it. Six months after that, I was leading a normal life.
I do more now than I did prior to the FMS. In 2004 I moved from my home where I had lived for 23 years to be near my daughter. I now raise chickens, guinea pigs, have 3 cats, and an old dog. I have joyfully returned to square dancing weekly."

Fight Fibromyalgia successfully- using ALL natural products.

Stop Shuffle Syndrome

What is "Shuffle Syndrome?"
Are you uncomfortable and dissatified with your current situation?
****
(1) Shuffle Syndrome: .....You are being shuffled back and forth among doctors and professionals and feeling as if you aren't getting any answers......You are shuffling back and forth among uncomfortable decisions weighing on your mind and affecting your health and wellness......You are unable to feel confident with any possible choices.

(2) Your body is communicating that your manageable stress level is about to "max out.".....Your health and energy level cannot keep up with the demands you place on yourself.

(3)Your Thinking Reflects Depression......Another way to describe depression is lack of expression. You are having trouble communicating your concerns with others, and you have trouble believing in your own abilities.

(4) You Are Entering New Territory......Your life is shifting, you are in a new phase, life is no longer predictable and that is unsettling.

(5) You Have Outgrown Your Friends......Your interactions have changed among you and your friends and they don't meet your needs for support, but the transition is disheartening.

(6)You are in a "growth spurt." .....You are growing emotionally, intellectually, spiritually and you are searching for a new kind of balance in your life that enhances your physical and mental wellness.

There is a book to be published.
You have a story.
You tell it.

  • What isn't being written about?
  • You already know about the repetitive topics that you are tired of seeing.
  • Where do you need more answers?
  • What advice do you find yourself giving out?

The next fibromyalgia book is going to be written here. Maybe the psychological aspect hasn't been discussed enough? What about the strain on marriages? What do children think about their own health growing up with parent who has suffered so much? What is fibromyalgia doing to the economy? Is there a personality type most associated with fibromyalgia. Are serious diseases often misdiagnosed because someone has had the same vague symptoms for decades? Are there special exercise considerations?

This year I plan to write a book, in regular fomat or E-Book format based on what you really want to see in print. I need to know what your concerns are, especially your own unmet concerns.

Need a Change? Change Your Mind First.

*** Try Wellness Web Coach

Einstein once said the sign of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. I remind myself of this bit of wisdom every time I experience frustration. It is easy to complain to myself. I can vent for a while until I grow tired of it. Eventually I realize I wasted my time when I could have been doing something else. To prevent history from repeating itself, doing something different is the ideal.
Wanting something different is good. Change is a necessary part of life. We look forward to change and sometimes we fear change. Whenever we are dissatisfied with something or see an unmet need, we desire change. To make that change more fulfilling and successful, the mind has to change along with it. The mind has to give up something in order to allow for successful change.
Acceptance of change is not always easy, even when the change is welcomed. Graduations, job promotions, and marriages are wonderful events that require new responsibilities, behaviors, schedules, attitudes, etc. Someone who can transition through these changes with eagerness and persistence will experience lasting fulfillment.
“Easier said than done,” becomes a standard mantra when someone is not accustomed to pushing themselves through unfamiliar transformations. Saying good-bye to the old to make room for the new can be difficult. Even when old habits have “worn our their welcome,” it is awkward to change because the old has become comfortable.
A support network is an attractive approach. Teaming up with others who encounter similar circumstances reduces isolation. A group effort is a big morale boost for everyone involved. As humans we were never meant to go through things alone. When you want to help yourself and others, assemble a group that will help each member grow.
